A Collection of Botany Related URLs, an enormous collection of internet resources now called the Internet Directory for Botany, including general biology links and research groups around the world. There are mirrors worldwide.

Acadia Centre for Estuarine Research focuses on estuary research in Eastern Canada. Contains a small library of their research publications, but an extensive text resources library. Also has links page to other environmental sites.

Algae-L, an email-based LISTSERV for phycologists

Aquaria. Search engine site relating to fish information. Search under cyanobacteria produces small list of links.

Photosynthesis Center at Arizona State University. This premiere site is dedicated to photosynthesis research and education. Contains a truly extensive library of published resources. Has a diverse range of information starting from the elementary school level all the way to the graduate research arena.

AIMS, research site based at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Good sized site containing large amounts of information regarding their research as well as other marine life. The information is in a web-page based format and doesn't include text resources. Has a images link under topics index.

Balaton Limnological Research Institute, Hungary. Site dedicated to study of comparative neurobiology of invertebrates.

Baltic Sea Portal. Monitors and relates information about phytoplankton and cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea at the Finnish Institute of Marine Research. Extensive lists of different algae types. Nice high quality scans in image gallery. Small reference page included. Many links to other marine and environmental sites. Formerly the Baltic Sea Agl@line.

B-Blooms. Monitors algal and cyanobacterial blooms in surface waters in Belgium.

Bedford Institute of Oceanography. Canada's largest centre for ocean research. Basically, information about their institute and programs.

Bibliography of Genetic Variation in Natural Populations. This bibliographic site (search engine style) is focused on fish. Allendorf's site is based at the University of Montana and is affiliated with the Mansfield Library. Search under cyanobacteria produces a small number of references.

Biological Oceanography Department at the Institut fur Meereskunde Kiel (IfM Kiel). Its purpose is to study biological processes in the pelagic ecosystem. Small, superficial web page.

CSIRO Research. Conducting research in the sustainable use of Australia's marine resources, the ocean's role in climate, and the effective conservation of the marine ecosystem integrity. Under research, then aquaculture link, there is information about its research pertaining to algae.

Cyano page. A small page containing basic information regarding the nature of cyanobacteria. Contains a few high quality images. Based at University of Miami.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab. An Alabama site that has its interests set in marine research and education. Many links to its various programs, but doesn't have any references available.

Department of Marine Botany, part of the Botanical Institute, Göteborg University, Sweden and of the Göteborg Marine Research Center. Concentrates on research and education in marine natural sciences.

Diatom Images at Bowling Green State University. A nice site with a great archive of microscopic diatom images.

Finnish Institute of Marine Research. Research reports and services. Gateway to Baltic Sea research.

Global Directory of Marine Biologists. Site allows those interested in marine and freshwater research to post their name and contact information.

Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Hawaii. Site designed to promote their institute, research, and programs.

Catalogue of Indian Ocean Benthic Algae, at University of California at Berkeley.. Started as a reference in order to catalogue algae in the region (Indian Ocean). An extensive site dealing with taxonomy and nomenclature. Also contains a search engine for its bibliographic references.

Institute of Fresh Water Ecology. Five labs in UK that work in the arena of freshwater sciences. Has a small page of algae related links to other web sites. There are also other links that cover the subjects of fish, microbial ecology, aquatics, and phytolimnology.

The Institute of Marine Biology of Crete. Has a nice page full of abstract links as well as other references. Also has links to other marine related sources on the internet.

Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research Ltd. (IOLR), includes three research centers: The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Haifa, the Yigal Allon Kinneret Limnological Laboratory (KLL) near Tiberias and the National Center for Mariculture (NCM) in Elat. They're dedicated to aquatic research. Has large list of their research publications which are available on an exchange basis. Nicely designed page.

Kazusa DNA Research Institute. Large scale DNA research facility involving plant and human sequencing.

The Krib. Oldest living, aquarium web site. Focuses on freshwater aquatic plants and tropical fish aquariums. Has a multitude of links. The cyanobacteria page contains a haven of articles and documented news group interactions.

La Station Biologique de Roscoff. No English version available.

Marine Biological Laboratory at University of Copenhagen. The lab has a long eventful history that originally was dedicated to marine and zoological research. Contains an enormous amount of links to other related web sites as well as resources and literature.

Marine Biology Lab, Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University, deals with marine research and education. It also focuses on marine biotechnology and biomedicine. Has a small page of links and related resources. Linked with Duke's Pearse Memorial library.

Marine Biology Web is designed as an educational resource for marine biology students. Contains a truly extensive list of resources divided into subject areas such as: ecology, reproduction, environments, community processes, and an organisms search engine. Nice sized page of references regarding toxic algal blooms. Excellent site.

Marine Biotechnology Institute (MBI), Kamaishi, Japan. Contact: Dr. Masanobu Kawachi

Marine Science Center, a unit of Northeastern University. A slow loading page with visual decoration. The center supports a broad variety of research and education programs in marine biology and related fields. A tremendous amount of links that include many other related sites.

The Marine Science Institute (MSI). A nonprofit science and environmental education organization located in California. Contains quite a few links related to their program focus, but not any bibliographic references.

Marine Sciences Research Center, SUNY at Stony Brook is a center for marine research, graduate education, and public service. Contains detailed commentary regarding their various programs.

Micro-algal Biotechnology at the J. Blaustein Institute for Desert Research Ben Gurion University. Their goal is to develop the biotechnology involved in mass production of microalgae for various commercial purposes. Has a nice sized list of their research publications.

Murray Regional Algal Coordinating Committee website provides information about toxic cyanobacterial blooms. Alerts are posted for this region of Australia. Clear and extensive practical information about cyanobacterial blooms includes detailed descriptions of assessment, causes and remedies, written in language accessible to the general public.

Microbial Germplasm Database, Oregon State University (Northwest Alliance for Computational Science and Engineering). Has publications database for Phytophthora infestans and medical nuclide which are in a search engine format.

MICRO-NET Microbial Information Network of China . A combination of four different organizations. Linked to many databases which include plant viruses online and medline workbench. Within are two journal links to mycology, lichenology, and the Chinese Journal of Biotechnology.

Mining Company Guide to Ecology. Commercial oriented web page with many advertisements. Has link to other sites related to marine biology.

Mote Marine Laboratory. Links to pages regarding eco-toxicology, coastal ecology, and tropical research.

National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria is a site in India that maintains information about cyanobacteriologists, the center's culture collection, and a searchable bibliographic database.

National Oceanographic Data Center - NODC. One of three NOAA environmental data centers, and serves as a national repository and dissemination facility for global ocean data. Has plankton links as well as a few images. Within are many marine related links.

Oceanic Ocean Information Center. Contains information regarding oceanographic research.

Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo. Their goal is cooperative research in ocean sciences in Japan. Has publications lists by year. Subject areas include oceanography, biochemistry, geology, and fishery sciences. Also has links to other oceanography sites.

Paleolimnology Site, Indiana University. Central Web resource for those interested in and/or practicing paleolimnology. Has links to a few journal sites and has a multitude of related links.

Photobiology Online, a joint presentation of the American and European Societies for Photobiology, Univ. of Kansas Med. Ctr. and Univ. of Dundee. Contains links to journals, books, and other references.

Plankton Net at University of Guelph. Focuses on Plankton Ecology, Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography. Pleasing web page with nice graphics. Extremely large list of various journals available.

Plankton Productivity at The Institute of Ocean Sciences in British Columbia. Institute studies the interactions between the oceans and climate to provide information about basic productivity of the ocean. Contains Zooplankton Database which is available for use by other government institutions, university research facilities, and private research groups, including access to images. But, you must contact them before access can be achieved.

Institute of Oceanology and Department of Marine Ecology, Polish Academy of Science, Sopot. Two separate sites in one. Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences focuses on research in marine physics, dynamics, chemistry, biochemistry, and ecology. Contains many resources including journals, library search engine, oceanographic databases, and other useful links. The marine ecology page contains related books and research projects.

National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria at Bharathidasan University in India. Gives information about the facility, its culture collection, and services available.

NOAA - Environmental Information. Located in Colorado, NOAA performs oceanic and atmospheric research and develops remote sensing systems.

Protist Image Database at University of Montreal. Contains images and information on selected genera of algae and protozoa and resources in other related fields. Small gallery of images, but high quality scans.

Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Miami. Mainly information about their program.

Sars Centre for Marine Biotechnology at Bergen University in Norway. The major focus is on the molecular biology of marine animals, with emphasis on functional and ideally comparative studies. Mostly just email links.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Univ. California San Diego. Their goal is to seek, teach, and communicate deep scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, Earth, and other planets for the benefit of society and the environment. Lists various projects in many different areas of study. Does have searchable database and also connected to library server.

Seaweed Homepage, University College, Galway. Has information on all aspects of seaweeds and marine algal biology. Contains Algaebase which is a searchable database, this link also has journals and other literature. Other links involve books and a small gallery of algae images. User friendly site.

Shoals Marine Laboratory run by Cornell and University of New Hampshire. Information about their program and studying marine science in their facility.

Checklist of phytoplankton in the Skagerrak-Kattegat. Has information on phytoplankton and heterotrophic protists found in the Skagerrak and the Kattegat, N. Atlantic Ocean. Contains, images, references, and information regarding diatoms, dinoflagellates, and other plankton. Nice, extensive image gallery. User friendly site.

Synechocystis 6803 is the subject of this site from the Microbial Cell Project dedicated to this model organism. The site includes general information about 6803 and detailed information about individual efforts at the center.

Introduction to the Cyanobacteria at the University of California Museum of Paleontology. Nice basic page about cyanobacteria with a few links.

Dept. of Oceanography, University of British Columbia. Information about their program and University, but has nice link to NE Pacific Cultural Collection page (algae page).

U.S. Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network. A collaborative effort among over 780 scientists and students extending the opportunities and capabilities of the individual sites to promote synthesis and comparative research across sites and ecosystems, and among other related domestic and international research programs.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Marine Biological Laboratory. Oldest private marine laboratory in the western hemisphere, dedicated to teaching and research. Has a page full of links to MBL journals, publications, and databases. Also has a catalog and database page related to marine organisms.
