Fall 2008We are pleased to bring you our new and improved edition of the BioNews! We are especially proud to offer this “on line” version so you can “click and read” about the happenings in the Biological Sciences Department at your leisure.

The BioNews provides us with the unique opportunity to:

  • Introduce our new faculty members and their research.
  • Share all the exciting world class research and recent discoveries going on within the Biological Sciences Department
  • “Showcase” our exceptional alumni and students by sharing their stories of accomplishments and discoveries.

2008 Outstanding Alumni

Each year the Biological Sciences Department recognizes alumni who have achieved unusual success in their careers upon acquiring their degree(s) and leaving the corridors of Lilly Hall. Sen. Lugar meets with Purdue biofuels researchers, tour labs and Purdue Research Park

U.S. Sen. Richard G. Lugar on Thursday (Oct. 9) met with Purdue University biofuels and alternative energy researchers and toured campus research facilities at Discovery Park and the Purdue Research Park.

Nancy Ho
Nancy Ho, a senior research scientist at LORRE who is examining genetically engineered yeast for ethanol production from organic materials. Ho also founded Green Tech America, an alternative energy company at the Purdue Research Park. Nancy Ho will be named a 2008 Biological Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award winner on October 30th, 2008.

The Republican senator heard presentations from biofuel, biotechnology and hydrogen storage researchers at Purdue's Laboratory for Renewable Resource Engineering (LORRE) and Birck Nanotechnology centers in Discovery Park. He also toured facilities at Swift Enterprises Ltd., a Purdue Research Park-based company developing a lead-free, alternative aviation fuel. Lugar met with Purdue President France A. Córdova and Victor L. Lechtenberg, vice provost for engagement, and joined a tour of research laboratories led by Alan Rebar, executive director of Purdue's Discovery Park.

Meet our new Development Officer

Sandy HowarthSandy Howarth has recently assumed the position of director of development for the Departments of Biological Sciences and Statistics at Purdue University. Howarth was most recently executive director for the Perry Township Education Foundation. She has also served as director of development and also gifts and grant director for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis.

Howarth brings with her over eight years of experience in development and 15 years of experience in consulting. To encourage awareness and support of non-profit agencies, she was responsible for orchestrating numerous fundraising events, securing event underwriters, and implementing fund raising/donor cultivation programs.

In 2007, she managed the Benevon “Raising More Money” donor cultivation program for the Perry Township Education Foundation and raised over $85,000 at the inaugural breakfast event. In 2006, Howarth raised $2.3 million in financial support to cover operating expenses and build 24 Habitat for Humanity homes for low-income Indianapolis families. She also designed, implemented, and instructed training programs to increase organizational productivity.

A native of Indiana, Howarth graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Human Resource Management from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Ind.
